“Champions” “League”

It is more than a bit silly that European football has to misinform the sporting world so pathetically. It is not a league, and most eligible clubs are not representative champions. Imagine those unfamiliar with ‘Champions League’ tuning into Liverpool-Barcelona tonight seeing the Catalans ahead 1-0, but going out of the tournament. Huh? I might explain that Liverpool won 2-1 in the first leg at the Nou Camp, but if they were any good at arithmetic I’d also have to explain the ridiculous away goals rule.

Anyways, Liverpool, who finished third in England last season, ‘beat’ last year’s ‘Champions League’ winners 0-1 and 2-2 on aggregate tonight. Liverpool had the better of the first half and John Arne Risse could have had a hat trick. It remained 0-0 and Barca came out a bit stronger in the second half. Ronaldinho hit the post before Icelander Edjur Gudjohnsen put them ahead 1-0 after being played onside by Alvero Arbelo. There were some nervy moments for the Scousers but their great win in Spain proved to be enough for the 2005 ‘Champions League’ winners to go through.

Elsewhere, FC Porto put a real scare into Chelski, before bowing out. Ricardo Quaresma was offsides, but the flag stayed down, and I was really looking forward to a indignant Jose Moaninho press conference. It was not to be though, as Helton shat himself on a weak Arjen Robben shot before Michael Ballack finished the Portugese off with a nice finish.

Valencia and Roma also advance to the quarters knocking out the favored Inter and Lyon. There was evidently a brawl in Spain, but I have not seen it yet.

  1. All of Euro Soccer competitions are confusing to Americans.

    Cups, No playoffs etc.

I really thought Chelski was going down. Ahem
    Did anyone say lucky lately??

How else would you do home and home — or would you have random draw for home field?

  2. Chelski were unlucky to be behind…and scored the only legit goal….much as I hate them they deserve to go through.

If you can’t understantd Euro domestic leagues you are pretty thick..most points win…end of.

    Extra time>away goals>penalites
At 2-2, they should have kept playing….

  3. blahblahblah, UEFA Cup is where it’s at.
