Premiership Preview: Portsmouth

Can Harry keep Pompey moving up the table?

Interesting Wikipedia Fact: Britain’s youngest convicted hooligan – a 10 year old – was a Portsmouth supporter, as was Britain’s youngest female hooligan. In 2004, Portsmouth hooligans broke the record for the greatest number of imprisonments resulting from one single game, when over 100 Portsmouth supporters – many of whom were schoolboys – were sent to prison for their behaviour in a riot that followed their team’s 1-0 victory over detested rivals Southampton.

Jackie’s Club Knowledge: Pompey have been up for four years now and their supporters seem as loud as any on the idiot box. I’m pretty fond of Arsenal’s retirement home and Pompey seem pretty secure as a premiership side.

Worst Kit:

Fantasy: Matty Taylor was easily the most valuable defender last season, as he regularly played midfield and occasionally up top. This year he’s over priced. It is not immediately clear who will start for Pompey. Kanu was pretty solid last season, but David Nugent might replace him this season, as might Utaka oe even Lua-Lua. If it is the the Nigerian than he’ll be worth the long term investment as he’s listed as a cheap midfielder. Calamity James is solid when the match-ups are right.

Best and Worst Possible Finish: 10th and 15th-Pompey overachieved last season and the squad is now looking a bit old and thin to me. Perhaps Distin and Sol will form a strong defence as the base, but even with Taylor and Kanu’s wonderful seasons, Portsmouth were outscored by 9 premiership clubs last season. I’m skeptical that they can improve on that.
