J.P. Giglio posts a preview of Carolina gridiron:

Butch Davis didn’t make a lot of friends in his first season by angling a raise out of a four-win season but he made a lot of money. Davis’ job is as far from danger as possible but there is pressure to prove he’s worth the $2 million-plus salary.

What kind of pressure? What are the expectations?

The Heels also avoid what could be the top three teams in the Atlantic Division so the schedule sets up for Davis to make a big improvement, at least to 7-5. If not, the Rams Club should ask for a refund.

On one hand, this seems reasonable to me. With 18 returning starters and a favorable league schedule a bowl run seems like a real possibility for this team. On the other hand (left), this team won 4 games last season. All of those were at home. In fact, North Carolina gridiron has not won a game outside of North Carolina since October 6th, 2002 (Arizona State). I don’t care how much Butch Davis makes, even Vince Lombardi would need more than two years to turn around the program. If his salary is going to be mentioned and held against him after two seasons (never mind a May preview of his second season) than why bother with trying to build (not rebuild) a program?

We have to be fair about the 2008 season. We have questions at QB and in the secondary. The first four games are brutal and with bad luck we could be 1-5 heading to Charlottesville. If we are, I sure hope fans don’t start asking if he is worth the money. That can’t necessarily be decided this season.

No news about Wayne, Tywon, or Danny. All three have a legitimate shot at being drafted in the first round. All three have a legitimate risk of not being drafted in the first round.

What school would Tommy turn down? A few Yank footballers have decisions. Stat-heads applying to be Manager. Yank twat > Uzbekistan mobster.

  1. Let’s be really honest. The Heels beat Duke at Kenan after Duke (shocker) missed an easy field goal. That would have been 3 wins…..and a $400,000 raise! Seeing that he got his raise the week before the Duke game, that could have legitimately happened! Brilliant. Ha ha.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda…..the motto of Duke football.

  2. I ATTENDED FOUR CAROLINA GAMES, AND CAME AWAY IMPRESSED WITH THE TEAM’S FIGHTING TO THE BITTER END IN EACH OF THOSE GAMES. TOO MANY TIMES IN RECENT YEARS THEY SIMPLY QUIT.

I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH COMPENSATING THE COACH. I BELIEVE WE’LL SEE GOOD RESULTS IN ANOTHER TWO YEARS, AND MAY HAVE A FEW PLEASANT SURPRISES EVEN THIS YEAR.

I, FOR ONE, AM READY FOR A COMPETITIVE FOOTBALL TEAM. IT SEEMS LIKE A CENTURY SINCE MACK BROWN LEFT.

  3. So, you advocate giving a coach a $400,000 raise for winning four games…..one of which was Duke? That’s great! LOL! He should have bolted to Arkansas.
